How to use the algebra solver with steps
An algebra solution should show how each operation changes an expression or equation. Enter the original problem and ask for the rule used at each step.
A useful method
- Simplify each side, including any parentheses.
- Use inverse operations on both sides to isolate the variable.
- Substitute the result into the original equation to verify it.
Worked example
Solve 2(x + 3) = 18
- Distribute the 2: 2x + 6 = 18.
- Subtract 6 from both sides: 2x = 12.
- Divide both sides by 2: x = 6.
Answer: x = 6; checking gives 2(6 + 3) = 18.
Check your work
An operation applied to one side of an equation must also be applied to the other side.
Enter your own problem in the solver above and ask about any step you want explained.
