How to use the equation solver
Enter an equation with its equals sign to solve for the unknown. The method depends on its form: a linear equation can use inverse operations, while a quadratic may need factoring or the quadratic formula.
A useful method
- Identify the variable and simplify both sides.
- Choose a method that fits the equation type.
- Check every proposed root in the original equation.
Worked example
Solve x² − 5x + 6 = 0
- Find two numbers that multiply to 6 and add to −5: −2 and −3.
- Factor: (x − 2)(x − 3) = 0.
- Set each factor to zero: x − 2 = 0 or x − 3 = 0.
Answer: x = 2 or x = 3.
Check your work
Squaring, multiplying by a variable, or clearing denominators can introduce invalid candidates. Always check roots in the starting equation.
