How to use the fraction calculator
Use the fraction calculator to add, subtract, multiply, divide, or simplify fractions. Write each numerator and denominator clearly, especially when the problem contains several operations.
A useful method
- For addition or subtraction, find a common denominator.
- Combine the numerators while keeping the common denominator.
- Reduce the result by dividing numerator and denominator by their greatest common factor.
Worked example
1/2 + 1/3
- The least common denominator of 2 and 3 is 6.
- Rewrite 1/2 as 3/6 and 1/3 as 2/6.
- Add: 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6.
Answer: 5/6.
Check your work
Do not add denominators when adding fractions: 1/2 + 1/3 is not 2/5.
