How to use the word problem calculator
A word problem becomes easier when you name the unknown and translate each sentence into a relationship. Include the full wording and any units so the solver can set up the correct equation.
A useful method
- Define a variable for the quantity you need.
- Translate the relationships in the question into an equation.
- Solve the equation, then interpret and check the answer against the story.
Worked example
Three notebooks cost $12 in total. What does one notebook cost?
- Let n be the cost of one notebook in dollars.
- Three equal prices total 12, so 3n = 12.
- Divide by 3: n = 4.
Answer: One notebook costs $4.
Check your work
Check whether the answer needs a unit, a whole number, or a reasonable range in the context of the question.
Enter your own problem in the solver above and ask about any step you want explained.
