How to use the statistics calculator
Statistics summarizes a data set. Include the values and specify whether you need the mean, median, mode, range, or a measure of spread.
A useful method
- List the data and sort it if finding the median.
- Choose the statistic requested and apply its definition.
- Report the result in the units of the original data where relevant.
Worked example
Find the mean, median, and range of 2, 4, 4, 6, 9
- Add the five values: 2 + 4 + 4 + 6 + 9 = 25, then divide by 5.
- The sorted middle value is 4.
- Subtract the smallest value from the largest: 9 − 2 = 7.
Answer: Mean = 5, median = 4, range = 7.
Check your work
For standard deviation, say whether the data is the full population or a sample; the formulas use different denominators.
